We’ve had a few enjoyable days making our way around Cairns and the rainforest. We camped at Lake Placid Rainforest Retreat which was a perfect base for our adventures.

Cairns impressed us with its Esplanade, beautiful parklands and lagoon and its really well curated art gallery. The gallery had an exhibition of War Quilts which was really interesting and inspiring.

We swam at Stoney Creek at Barron Gorge which was refreshing and one of Rod’s favourite places. It reminded him of when we used to visit Glenbrook Creek in the Blue Mountains, which was as pristine as Stoney Creek back in the day.

We took a trip up to Kuranda on the railway, had a poke around the town and returned on the Skyrail. We did this trip back in 1998 and it was great to look back on that visit and reflect on what has happened in our lives since then, we had no idea at the time that 27 years later we would once again visit this special place in the rainforest.

Tomorrow we leave Cairns and head into the Daintree for more adventures.
