I can’t believe it’s been 50 days on the road. Each day seems to be a new adventure, with new people to meet and beautiful landscapes to enjoy.
After leaving the Savannah Way we made our way up to Karumba which is on the coast in Gulf country. It was a long drive, but once we were there it was beautiful. We called into Normanton on the way to visit ‘Krys’ a replica of the largest captured croc which was 8.6metres long!

From Normington we continued onto Karumba, which is the place to go if you are into fishing and love Barramundi. We gave the fishing a miss but enjoyed a meal of fresh Barramundi while we watched the sun set into the ocean at the Sunset Bar. The colours were amazing.

After Karumba we made our way down Matilda’s way and called into a free camp which was so peaceful after the busyness of all the fishermen at Karumba.

From there we moved onto Mary Kathleen – the abandoned town, where we camped for the night. Around 1958 Mary Kathleen township was established and was home to thousands of residents, most worked on Australia’s largest known uranium deposit at Mary Kathleen Mine.
They enjoyed a bustling village community with a school, Olympic-size pool, open-air cinema, golf course, two churches and a hospital that delivered more than 200 babies.
With the mine long closed in 1982 the structures of the township have all but been removed. You can still see remnants of the different buildings. It was a great place to camp, lots of room to spread out. We had a bike ride around the town and in the morning we had a couple of visitors, a Shetland Pony who decided to have a drink under our awning and a suckling calf as well as lots of different birdlife. It was a great campground, with so much history, such an interesting place.

Our final night in Queensland, we camped at a free camp next to a billabong in Camoweel. Tomorrow we cross the border into the Northern Territory.
