We made camp at a Mareeba Bush Stays which was so peaceful and felt quite remote. We lit our fire and cooked some bangers and watched the flames well into the evening. Next day we decided to take the ‘Waterfall Way’ and checked out 3 or 4 waterfalls along the route as well as the huge curtain fig which was an amazing sight.
We travelled through the Atherton Tablelands impressed with the beautiful green vistas. We stopped for lunch at Mungalli Biodynamic Farmhouse Cafe, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch and stocked up on organic icecream.
From there we set up camp at Bonadio RV and Nature Camp, which was a beautiful spot on the banks of the Barron River and amongst fields of sugar cane and maise.
We were told by numerous people that we needed to take a trip to Chilligoe in outback Queensland, which was about 2 hours away. So we headed off, not quite sure what to expect, but what we found was a lovely little country town, with amazing views and rock formations, as well as caves to explore, a fantastic swimming hole filled with spring water, and a publican in the local pub that loved a chat.
We set up camp at the back of the pub, it was a free camp, but we went into the pub for dinner, so not quite free, but good fun.
Our final day in the Atherton Tablelands was a visit to the Herberton Historic Village. This was a whole colonial village from the 1800’s that is now privately run. It is set up over 16 acres that was filled with relics of the past. We were treated to freshly made damper and billy tea while we were there which was delicious.
So we say good bye to Atherton Tablelands, a beautiful green part of Queensland and continue on along the Savannah Way to more adventures.
